Why is the Southern Ocean freshening?

Our new study that was just published in Nature suggests that northward transport of freshwater by sea ice from Antarctica can explain most of the observed freshening in to open ocean surface and intermediate waters of the Southern Ocean over the past few decades. These results have important consequences for global climate by affecting the deep-to-surface ocean exchange of heat, carbon and nutrients.

Effect of freshwater transport by sea ice on Southern Ocean salinity over the period 1982 through 2008. Upper panel: Sea-ice conveyor belt transports freshwater from the coastal to the open ocean, changing the ocean's salinity. Lower panel: Increasing sea-ice transport freshened the open ocean and, by leaving the salt behind in the coastal region, compensated for part of the freshening by enhanced glacial meltwater input.
